My Trucks are squeaky, what do I do?

Some sound is to be expected, we set out to make an awesome truck not a silent one.  That being said here is what might be going on.

  • The truck squeaks
    • Dust, dirt, and other debris can build up in the pivot cup, between the bushings and the bushing seat, and the bushings and washer.
      • With a damp rag or towel wipe the ball pivot, inside of the pivot cup, flat faces of the bushings, bushing seat, and washer.  Dry the surfaces and re-install.  The squeak should be resolved
      • Apply a small amount of bar soap, liquid dish soap, or wax to the ball pivot and bushing seats.  This will not get rid of the sound permanently but it should do the trick for a while.  Keep in mind with the use of wax or soap lubricant debris can build and over time damage your truck.  Be sure to inspect your gear before riding.
    • New bushings have a short break in period of a few days.  Brand new urethane can a little squeaky.
  • The truck rattles
    • The most common culprit is a loose Kingpin nut causing the washers to rattle. Please try tightening it and seeing if the rattling goes away.  Overtime the pivot cup may wear and cause extremely small gaps between the pivot cup and ball pivot or the pivot cup and baseplate to develop.  This may produce a “rattling” noise while riding.
      • Contact Atlas Trucks for new nylon or urethane pivots that will put your trucks back in tolerance and resolve this issue.

Can I run a cupped washer boardside on my Atlas Trucks?

  • The Atlas Truck is designed intentionally without a boardside washer. The baseplate is wide enough to fully support most aftermarket bushings. Adding a washer boardside is possible but will change the geometry of the truck with undesirable results. We do not recommend using any kind of washer boardside on the Atlas Truck.

Why does the Atlas Truck Kingpin bolt head not contact the baseplate?

  • The Atlas Truck Kingpin incorporates a tapered portion near the bolt head.  This allows the Kingpin to be seated into a matching tapered bore hole in the baseplate.  The result is a zero-slop fit with the convenience of a removable kingpin.  Picture a coffee cup sliding into a sleeve.

I’m having trouble installing my Atlas Trucks with my skate tool.  The socket doesn’t fit between the nut and baseplate.  What should I do?

  • The Atlas Truck has a massive ball pivot design that requires a wider and stronger baseplate.  It is usually possible to use most skate tools but it can be a tight fit.  If your particular tool is not fitting try using a 3/8” open ended wrench to secure the nut.  This will get you out riding in no time.

I’m having trouble installing my trucks through my drop through cut out.  The baseplate doesn’t fit   What should I do?

  • The Atlas Truck has a massive ball pivot design that requires a wider and stronger baseplate.  The minimum width for the drop through cut out is 1.13”.  Most decks should be able to accommodate Atlas Trucks.  If your deck does not have a cut out that fits Atlas Trucks it is easy to enlarge the cut out with a file or coarse sand paper.  Simply file or sand the sides of the drop through cut out until the baseplate fits.  You can also just topmount the deck.

I hear my Atlas Trucks have rake and are flippable- what does this mean?

  • Atlas Trucks have rake, this means that the axle is offset from the pivot axis.  Atlas Trucks are flippable, this means the hanger can be installed with the axle farther away from or closer to the baseplate.  Atlas Trucks come assembled with positive rake, the axle is farther away from the baseplate.  This setting produces a stable but lively turning characteristic.  It is perfect for cruising, carving, freeride, and light downhill.

The hanger can be flipped one hundred and eighty degrees so that the axle is closer to the baseplate.  This setting produces an extremely stable turning characteristic that has insane lean.  It is perfect for fast freeride, and downhill.  You can experiment with flipping only one hanger but,   IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO RUN ONLY THE REAR HANGER FLIPPED AND THE FRONT ONE UNFLIPPED.  Your board will be much more stable if it steers from the front, not the back.

My Atlas Trucks feel too loose or have too much turn.  How do I tighten them?

  • The easiest way to adjust the “tightness” or how much turn Atlas Trucks have is to tighten or loosen the kingpin nut.  To tighten your trucks and increase stability, rotate the kingpin nut clockwise until the desired feel is achieved with a 9/16” wrench or skate tool.
  • If you are unable to achieve the feel you are looking for by tightening or loosening the kingpin nut, think about different bushings.  Atlas Trucks come stock with premium super high rebound 89a barrel bushings.  For a more stable ride try a harder bushing (higher durometer) or different bushing shape (stepped barrel, or stepped cone).  Keep in mind Atlas Trucks were not designed to be compatible with tall bushings.  Whatever your bushing set-up make sure the kingpin nut is fully engaged and that you check your equipment before you ride.

My Atlas Trucks feel too tight or do not turn enough.  How do I loosen them?

  • The easiest way to adjust the “tightness” or how much turn Atlas Trucks have is to tighten or loosen the kingpin nut.  To loosen your trucks and increase responsiveness, rotate the kingpin nut counter-clockwise until the desired feel is achieved with a 9/16” wrench or skate tool.
  • If you are unable to achieve the feel you are looking for by tightening or loosening the kingpin nut, think about different bushings.  Atlas Trucks come stock with premium super high rebound 89a barrel bushings.  For a more responsive ride try a softer bushing (lower durometer) or different bushing shape (cone).  Keep in mind Atlas Trucks were not designed to be compatible with tall bushings.  Whatever your bushing set-up make sure the kingpin nut is fully engaged and that you check your equipment before you ride.

How do I remove my pivot cup?

  • The Atlas Truck Pivot Cup is designed to be removable.  To remove the pivot cup unthread the kingpin nut with a 9/16” wrench or skate tool and take out the hanger.  Use a small hammer to tap out your kingpin.  When tapping out the kingpin, thread the kingpin nut on to kingpin bolt to protect the threads.  When the kingpin is removed thread the axle into the “airgap” in the bottom of the pivot cup.  When the axle is fully threaded into the pivot cup use the hanger to remove the pivot cup from the baseplate.

How do I change my wheels and bearings?

  • To change wheels and bearing on your Atlas Trucks you much first remove the axle nuts with a 1/2” wrench or skate tool.  Keep track of the nuts and speed rings, the speed rings like to stick to bearings or axle nuts.  Use the tips of the axles to pry bearings from the wheels.  Install your desired components and reassemble.  Atlas trucks are designed to have only one speed ring per wheel.  The speed ring should be installed between the axle nut and the outer bearing.  The machined step in the Atlas Truck axle takes the place of the interior speed ring.

What durometer are my stock bushings?

  • Atlas Trucks come assembled with premium super high rebound 89a barrel bushings.  This bushing shape and durometer covers a wide range of riding styles and applications.

Are my Atlas Hangers compatible between 40 and 48 degree baseplates?

  • Yes!  All Atlas components are cross compatible.  All Atlas Truck hangers and Atlas Truck baseplates are interchangeable.

What do bearing spacers do and should I use them?

  • Bearing spacers are metal cylinders that sit between each bearing in the hub of a wheel.  The spacer supports the inner race of the bearings while they are compressed by the axle nut.  They keep the bearings spinning freely and increase the lifespan of your bearings and wheels.
  • Some bearings have wider inner races that eliminate the need for a separate spacer.  They are commonly referred to as bearings with built in spacers.  Either way spacing and supporting your bearings is a must for high performance and to avoid premature wear and tear of your equipment.
